Walking Hints And Tips

Clothing: You don't need any special clothing for most walks. Just be sensible and wear clothing suitable for the weather. Shoes should obviously be comfortable and suitable for walking. Walks around town usually keep to paved areas but occasionally we might cross a grassy or a slightly muddy area, although we try and avoid these especially in the autumn and winter.
Weekend country walks require clothing like walking boots and waterproof tops and trousers, depending on conditions. You might encounter mud, stiles, hills, rough ground and so on.

Drink: It's a good idea to bring a drink of water or other refreshing liquid especially when it's warm or hot.

Toilets: Not all walks are near public toilets, so don't drink too many cups of tea before a walk!

Safety: You are responsible for your own safety on a walk. Walk leaders are trained do their best to advise you before the walk of any expected hazards (like busy-road crossings and uneven pavements), but you must look after yourself. Take particular care when crossing roads and look out for obstacles like bollards.

The Highway Code applies to all road users, including walkers. A recent rule change of which you might not be aware is that a group walking along a road without a pavement should walk on the left (not on the right, as previously). See the link for an online version of the code.
